Cableways Tavern lies on the site of the steam powerhouse drawing the
cablecars over the hill from Stuart St on the Kaikorai Cablecar Line. Hence
the Tavern's name. A visit to the tavern finds the cablecar theme throughout.
Cableways Liquorland has a wine rack specially constructed from photos of
the No 4 Cablecar on the Kaikorai Line. Original pictures are displayed in
the bar of cablecars traveling the Kaikorai route. The Cableways Pokies with 18 machines continues the same theme. The Tramshed Bistro menu has cable car links in the menu titles eg The Straphold Steak Grill.

The Roslyn Line
Opened 1906 Closed 26.10. 1951

Route: Princes St/Rattray St(Shamrock Hotel)/Ross St/James St(now Falcon
St/Frasers Rd(Kaikorai Valley ). First work on this line began in Feb
1881-the first cable system in NZ and the first in the southern hemisphere. Cableways Tavern is the proud owner of the No 93, a restored original Roslyn car that was first registered on 14 August 1906, at least a century ago. For more information on what it was like riding the cablecars download the brochure: 'Cableways and the No 93' from the 'What's on' page.

The Kaikorai Line
Opened 9.10.1900 Closed: 31.7.1947

Route: Octagon/Stuart St/Kaikorai(site of Cableways Tavern)
The final run to the Kaikorai Tram sheds saw more than 150 adults and
children cram the one cablecar. The car stalled at the Junction. It was
thought this was because of the huge load. In fact the engine driver at
Kaikorai Valley thought the last car was in and turned off the steam. Once
back on, the car made it over the hill. Many souvenirs were acquired
from the cablecars by those final travelers in 1947.

or in the early history of Dunedin
and particularly Kaikorai, visit Cableways.
Ask bar staff to put the Cablecar DVD on screen-or come for lunch when it is playing-for
